Event Description

The role of ‘Prime Contractor’ is complex and critical to the proper and safe functioning of construction projects, both large and small. While common on almost all construction projects, even experienced Prime Contractors can find it challenging to consistently fulfill this health and safety role.


The many obligations of the Prime Contractor are often difficult to comprehensively implement successfully from one project to the next, yet little guidance is available - until now. This one-day course will provide participants with a clear and comprehensive understanding of the role and responsibilities of Prime Contractor. Topics covered include: the duties of the Prime Contractor and how they fit into those of other workplace parties; application and limitations of responsibilities seen from a compliance perspective; how to meet the test of due diligence; and, ‘best practices’ that will help ensure practical success as a Prime Contractor on all worksites.


The course is invaluable to anyone involved in construction management, contract management or health and safety on construction projects no matter how big or small.


Never before have two industry experts, with such different and yet complementary perspectives, come together to address this complex but often perplexing health and safety role.



Jeffery Lyth: Since beginning his career in safety over 28 years ago, Jeff Lyth has become recognized as an expert and innovator in workplace safety and leadership.  Throughout his career, Jeff has been involved in industry-leading innovation, such as the first Canadian use of computerized tower-crane anti-collision systems, the province-wide use of the ‘Safety Climate Tool’ survey from the Health and Safety Laboratory in the U.K., and the development of the BCCSA Silica Tool among other things.  His current work is largely in the leadership development/safety-II space, assisting a variety of organizations and safety departments to move beyond a conventional approach and to break through the performance plateaus associated with those views and methods.  He partners with Nancy Harwood under the Harwood Safety Group consulting to organizations as well as creating and facilitating training courses and public speaking engagements internationally and producing events locally in the Safety II space under his company, QSP Leadership.  His focus is on ‘productive safety’ and building capacity for operational resilience, learning, and adaptive capacity.



Nancy Harwood, B.A., LL.B: Nancy is a lawyer and principal of The Harwood Safety Group, leading a team of experts who provide legal and OSH consulting services to clients throughout BC. With over two decades of experience in health and safety law, Nancy advises on OSH matters, and is a workplace investigator. She brings a unique insight to compliance challenges and issues - understanding OSH requirements “from the inside out" as a former Director at WorkSafeBC. Nancy has also served on several international and national health and safety organizations and is currently Chair of the Actsafe Safety Association.

Refund Policy



Cancellations received at least 10 business days prior to the course will result in a full refund.


Cancellations received less than 10 business days but more than 5 full business days prior to the course are subject to an administration fee of $100 per day for full and half-day seminars, or $25 for breakfast sessions.


Registrants who do not show up for a course, and/or who do not notify CITN at least 5 full business days prior to the course date will be assessed the full cost of the course. There will be no refunds or credits in this case.


Substitution of attendees is permitted up to and including the day of the course.




CITN may have to postpone or cancel courses due to insufficient enrolment, in which case CITN’s liability will be limited to a refund of the registration fee.
