In response to moisture penetration problems in residential construction, some jurisdictions have mandated the adoption of rainscreen wall systems. These systems aren’t new, but they are evolving—sometimes resulting in confusion about what “rainscreen” means or how it relates to wall performance.
In this seminar, Graham Finch of RDH Building Science will provide an overview of rainscreen wall designs, including all the visible and hidden components and important factors in performance. He will review the underlying concepts of providing a capillary break and allowing drainage of water immediately behind the cladding. Then, diving deeper, he will touch on claddings and attachments, the air cavity and why width matters, water control, structural considerations, fire and combustibility, exterior insulation, onsite quality control, and more.

Graham is a Building Science Engineer working from RDH Building Science’s Victoria, BC office on projects across North America and internationally. He specializes in enclosure design, research, and investigation work for new and existing buildings. Graham is regarded as an industry leader in evaluating thermal energy and hygrothermal (heat, air, and moisture) performance of building enclosures. His research has resulted in several publications and practical recommendations for the construction industry for rainscreen wall designs. Graham is also the co-chair of the Rainscreen Performance Committee for the Rainscreen Association in North America, RAiNA.
