Event Description

The RSTS course provides 12 hours of instruction on critical safety awareness concepts. The RSTS course is 23 modules providing necessary education on basic and specialized safety awareness concepts in the roadbuilding and heavy construction industries. The first 11 modules (“RSTS Basic”) offer a robust introduction to basic safety awareness for both industries. In these 11 modules, you’ll learn about everything from general worksite safety and the importance of planning and hazard awareness to working safely around utilities, traffic accommodation and fatigue management.

An additional 12 modules focus on the various specialties of the two industries.  Each module offers a thorough review of key hazards on the various worksites as well as specialized terms, equipment, and tasks that you should be aware of.  These 12 modules cover specialties from earthmoving to highway maintenance as well as skid steer and snowplow operations.

RSTS – Intro

Welcome to the Roadbuilders Safety Training System (RSTS). In this module, we’ll walk you through how to complete your training and highlight different functions of this learning platform.

RSTS - M01 - The Law at Work

Work site safety is your business. This module will walk you through Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation as outlined by the Alberta government.

RSTS - M02 - General Awareness

A roadbuilding or heavy construction site is full of hazards that you need to be aware of. In this module, you’ll learn about the importance of planning, hazard assessments and how to prepare yourself in order to work safely.

RSTS - M03 – General Worksite Safety

In this module, you’ll learn about common hazards on roadbuilding and heavy construction work sites and how to ensure you can be a safer worker.

RSTS – M04 Fatigue Management

Fatigue management plays a critical role in safe work. This module will teach you the science behind fatigue management and provide you with tips for fatigue proofing.

RSTS - M05 - Specialized Work

Work is considered specialized when it only happens under certain circumstances. In this module, you’ll learn about basic hazards of different types of specialized work and how to control them.

RSTS – M06 Working with & around Mobile Equipment

Mobile equipment is the most common hazard in the roadbuilding & heavy construction industries. In this module, you’ll learn safe work practices for operating mobile equipment and for working around mobile equipment.

RSTS - M07 - Traffic Accommodation

When working near traffic, it is important to know how to maintain a safe work zone. This module will teach you about traffic control devices designed to keep you and motorists safe.

RSTS - M08 – Utilities

Some of the most dangerous hazards on a work site are utilities, both below and above ground. In this module, you’ll learn about how to get the job done safely when overhead power lines and underground utilities are in your work area.

RSTS - M09 - Excavation and Shoring

You learned about the prep work for excavation in the Utilities module. In this module, we’ll walk you through actual excavation and shoring once underground utilities are located and marked, and how to control the hazards inherent in the work.

RSTS – M10 Silica & Dust Exposure Prevention

Exposure to silica and respirable dust on the work site can be hazardous to your health. This module will teach you about the hazards and how to protect yourself including the proper use of a respirator.

RSTS – M11 WHMIS

WHMIS is a comprehensive system for providing health and safety information on hazardous products intended for use, handling, or storage in Canadian workplaces. In this module, you’ll learn how to use the WHMIS system to work safely with chemicals on the work site.

RSTS - M12 - Earthmoving

Roadbuilding takes a lot of earthmoving; earthmoving requires a lot of equipment. This module will help teach you how to be a safe earthmover; operate equipment; and perform tasks safely and efficiently.

RSTS – M13 - Sewer and Water

Sewer and water work installations involve work most people will never see. In this lesson, we’ll look at what’s buried beneath the surface and the safety precautions that are important for this work.

RSTS - M14 – Basework

Basework is the phase between grading and paving. It involves lots of workers, equipment, and traffic. In this module, you’ll learn about the safety procedures in place to avoid incidents.

RSTS - M15 - Crushing and Washing

Crushing and washing plants provide roadbuilders with crushed rock for concrete, asphalt, gravel and sand. As a worker on site, this module will teach you how this process works, and the safety hazards you will face on the job.

RSTS - M16 - Concrete

Concrete is made by mixing aggregates like sand and gravel with other cementitious materials, chemicals, air, and water. In this lesson, we will look at how this process works, concrete plant safety procedures, on-site operations, and how they affect you and your co-workers.

RSTS - M17 - Concrete in Construction

In roadbuilding, concrete is used to build a variety of things from sidewalks to overhead walkways. This module will help you identify potentially dangerous situations related to concrete in construction and show you how to avoid injuring yourself and others.

RSTS - M18 - Ready Mix Drivers

A key job in road construction is getting concrete to the job site safely. In this lesson, we’ll look at some of the key points involved in this process.

RSTS - M19 - Asphalt Plants

Asphalt is a combination of either aggregate or gravel and sand held together with liquid asphalt cement. In this module, you’ll learn about the two types of asphalt plants that mix these ingredients, and the procedures for working safely in and around the plants themselves.

RSTS – M20 – Paving

Paving is the final phase of roadbuilding. Most paving operations follow the same procedures, but you may notice a few differences between urban and highway operations.. This module will help guide you through the safety procedures associated with paving, including proper PPE and safe work practices.

RSTS - M21 - Highway Maintenance

Making our highways safe for travel is a big task and includes more than 90 different jobs, from pothole patching to snow plowing. In this module, you’ll learn about hazards and controls for the various tasks and the safe work practices of highway maintenance.

RSTS - M22 - Skid Steer Loader Operation

One of the most versatile pieces of equipment on any work site is the skid steer loader. In this module, you’ll learn about operating a skid steer loader, the unique safety concerns associated with this equipment, and other hazards you need to be aware of.

RSTS - M23 - Snowplow Operation

A snowplow operator is an essential job that requires specialized skills. In this module, we’ll walk you through the different types of snowplows; how to maintain your snowplow; and hazards associated with this critical job.
