Course Description (8 hours / EOCP 0.6 CEU's). Maximum 15 Students
This course focuses on how to use your Underground Utility Locating device to gain confidence learning
precision locating techniques.
Students require CSA certified steel toe boots and high visibility safety vest and bring your own Utility Locating
Device if possible. The course is approx. 60% theory and 40% hands-on practical. (Equipment can be provided,
please contact Instructor) Led by an experienced NULCA field certified Instructor. Note: There are no
prerequisites for this course.

Unit 1 Introduction & Housekeeping Unit 7 Visual Observation Skills
Unit 2 Basics of Locating Theory Unit 8 Safe Work Practices and Regulations
Unit 3 Using the Transmitter Unit 9 One-Call Legislation, Requests, and Documentation
Unit 4 Using the Receiver Unit 10 Public and Customer Relations
Unit 5 Marking Procedures Unit 11 Pipelines
Unit 6 Knowledge of Facilities Unit 12 Field Practical – Putting Theory into Practice
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
· Identify the risks of damage to underground utilities and potential consequences of locating errors.
· Identify the roles and responsibilities of utility owners, regulators, associations, ground disturbers,
BC1Call and utility locators.
· Explain how to; passively locate, actively locate and how grounding is used in locating utilities.
· Describe the basics of electricity that pertain to electromagnetic locating and fields as used in locating.
· Demonstrate transmitter operation, receiver operation and clamp to locate utilities.
· Identify different visual surface features of buried facilities.
· Describe the following Safety Requirements; PPE, emergency response procedures, traffic control
requirements, working safety around electricity, heavy equipment and excavations.
· Follow the steps of conducting a locate and use the marking system and color codes as per APWA.
· How to use GIS mapping, utility owner maps, typical mapping documents.
· Describe the key regulations regarding locating pipelines safety in British Columbia.
· Demonstrate basic utility locating techniques during a hands-on field practical.
· Apply theory to solve typical problems associated with conductors, equipment, distortion, or soil
conditions.
Students need to pass a written exam and a practical assessment to receive a Certificate valid for 3 years.

Refund Policy
COURSE REGISTRATION CANCELLATIONS, TRANSFERS & REFUNDS:
Cancellations received at least 14 business days prior to the course will result in a full refund.
Cancellations received less than 14 business days but more than 7 full business days prior to the course are subject to an administration fee of $100 per day for full and half-day seminars, or $25 for breakfast sessions.
Registrants who do not show up for a course, and/or who do not notify BCRB at least 7 full business days prior to the course date will be assessed the full cost of the course. There will be no refunds or credits in this case.
Substitution of attendees is permitted up to and including the day of the course.
COURSE CANCELLATION BY BCRB:
BCRB may have to postpone or cancel courses due to insufficient enrolment, in which case BCRB's liability will be limited to a refund of the registration fee.
